Did Coke and Mantrap Deliver The Goods?

Coke-Mantrap SUPER Open House

You know how sometimes you go to a concert or event and you think it’s going to be an awesome experience, but you leave disappointed because it wasn’t everything it was cracked up to be? Then there are other times (doesn’t happen very often) when you experience something bigger than you because the universe has aligned itself to give you a treat you’ll cherish forever?

That’s how the Super Open House with Coke and Mantrap turned out. If you think I’m exaggerating ask anybody who was there.

I don’t even know where to begin. To say that the SUPER Open House that took place on Saturday night (August 14) was incredible is an understatement. Even though the Antiques were missing – more on that in a minute – for me it was witnessing history in the making.

It all started last year on April 25th, 2009 when Cindy Cutler organized an Alumni High School Dance at LaSalle High School. If you haven’t watched the video of how this whole Back To The Open House thing got started again go watch it. I think you’ll find it interesting.

By the way, if you couldn’t get tickets for this past Open House, I’m going to tell you what to do for the next one so you don’ t miss out, but first let me tell you about Saturday night…

The Elks Club was packed with the band’s fans who were all beside themselves. You could feel the powerful energy in the hall before, during and even after the event. First Mantrap hit the stage at 9 o’clock sharp introduced by Mike “InTheNight” Triay.

[SIDE NOTE:] It was great to see  Mike InTheNight MC’ing the event. If you were a regular at Apple Martini in the Grove, you know there was only one guy who could get you out of the house on a Saturday night when you were planning on staying home. He’d come on the radio (92.3 fm) with his unique voice and style and hypnotize you to drive to the Grove, pay for parking, pay for cover charge, buy drinks and dance your ass off – all this when you had already said you were going to stay home. I kid you not… There were times when Mayra and I promised each other we would not turn on the radio to that station because we knew where we’d end up if we did. We love Mike InTheNight :-).

Mantrap

Miguel Martin, Jackie Molinares and Danny Jimenez of Mantrap.

Mantrap was AWESOME! They looked great and sounded fabulous. This group connects with the crowd in a special way. Miguelito Martin was having a blast singing to the groupies, but I guarantee you the groupies – not me of course (blushing) enjoyed it more than he did. Jackie Molinares was enchanting and sweet as

always. When she sings “Wishing On A Star”  everybody stops and listens because she’s truly mesmerizing.

Jackie in case you don’t know it, Miami loves you.

The other big moment of the evening came when Nelson Correa – Mantraps’ founder – was presented with a Proclamation from the City of Miami for Mantraps’ contribution to music in Miami. This was an emotional moment for the entire crowd. Nelson and Mantrap we are very proud of you.

OK, now to Coke…

We all know that Coke was among the top three bands that ruled the Open House era back in the 70’s. But my God, it’s been 35 years. Are these guys going to be able to pull if off again?

Back in the day, Coke had a unique sound that was unmistakably theirs. After all these years I still have the sound of Coke in my head. When you heard them you could tell it was Coke by the sound of their horn section. At least that’s how I remember it.

The horn section was an integral part of Coke’s character. So when I heard they also reunited I was ecstatic – for many reasons – one being that  we were going to have an opportunity to experience Coke again, and that the Miami Open Houses were officially back after 35 years.

So I guess you’re asking if Coke pulled it off. I’ll give you my answer in three words; “COKE SOUNDED TIGHT!” If you know a bit about music, you’ll know that’s the best compliment you could pay a band. Joe Rubio and Frank Batista make a great combination on vocals, the horn section still has it and Coke has FUNK! You had to be there.

Antiques Update – It would be inappropriate of me to speculate about what’s going on with the reunion of the Antiques. I will say this though… A year ago when I asked about the possibility of The Antiques reuniting the answer was;  “It’s Impossible!” Today I’m happy to say that it is no longer impossible. But we must keep pushing because it’s not in the bag yet. Keep leaving your comments below so they know we are serious fans. Look what’s happened already – and this is just beginning.

The Miami Open Houses are BACK!

TAKE ME BACK TO THE GOOD OLD DAYS … ONLY BETTER.
THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST OPEN HOUSES I EVER ATTENDED AND, AT THIS AGE (35 YEARS LATER), I CAN ALMOST APPRECIATE IT MORE. THE MUSIC SOUNDED BETTER THAN I REMEMBER AND THE CROWD REALLY GOT INTO IT. DON’T WANT TO MISS ANY OF THEM.

Also meeting old friends from the past and making new ones made it a most memorable experience!!!! My message to the ANTIQUES: BRING BACK THE MAGIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alby, thank you for sharing your thoughts. It’s nice to hear someone else say the August 14 event was a “MEMORABLE” experience. When I tell someone about it who wasn’t there I also describe it as a memorable experience but they think I’m exaggerating. It was truly memorable!

I used to go to the open houses back in the days,no only that my sister Marlena was Victor Rodriguez’s (trompeta) girlfriend at that time, the music sounded the same but i was disappointed because i didnt see Victor Trompeta (he was one of my favorites playing the lead trompet in the song “SABOR A MI”). I would love to know why Victor didnt attend the event.

Joe Rubio September 15, 2010 at 10:07 am

Diana,
I also would have love to have Victor as our lead trumpet, but unfortunately, last time we did a reunion, he could not play as well as before since he’s been out of it for all these years and it would had taken him a very long time to get back his chops and time was of the essence (as it is any instrument is hard to master, but Wind & Brass instruments are even harder). We are very happy with the job our lead trumpet player “Chuchi Jorge” did for he is well known musician who has played with the great Arturo Sandoval and Carlos Santana. Say hi to your Sister Marlena, hope she’s doing well, she’s a great lady and was hot too,LOL.

I would like to thank you on behalf of the Coke band for this kind and most positive article. It really took a super effort from all of the musicians involved to bring both Coke & Mantrap fans an event that would provide them with a little nostalgia and relive the wonderful times at the “Electrician Hall”, “McCallister Hotel” and “St. Sophia”. Unfortunately, we could not have all original players, and after all these years what band can,LOL. Many of our original musicians have either moved out of the state or just can no longer play an instrument. Luckily for Coke, we had 4 or our Original members playing. Our thanks go out to all our fans who continue to support “COKE” and see you all on November 20th at the “Heavy Weight” Band Open House with the Queens Kids (Another great band from the Electrician days). Please contact stonepromos@gmail.com for ticket info. God Bless You All.

Joe, thank you for stopping by. There are certain fan questions only the band musicians can answer, so I appreciate you dropping by and saying hello to the fans. See you November 20th.

Linda I am reading your comment and am at a lost. I am an orinal member of the band Coke and we did not have a female in the band or any of these people you are mentioning in your comments(?). I also do not remember a band by the name “Spoil system” playing with Coke at an Open House. By the way Coke was not playing back in 1969 or 1970? Please correct your facts so that there would not be any misunderstandings on who was a member of Coke. The original members of Coke were, myself, Ruben Perez, Pauld Garcia and Ariel Hernandez and the original lead singer of Coke was Gary Ortiz. Thank You and God Bless You.
